The lengths (durations) of various music notes/rests are fractions of the whole note (or rest): half, quarter, eighth etc.
Some notes use fractions of the beat: 1/8th note or rest lasts 1/2 a beat, 1/16th note or rest lasts 1/4 of a beat etc.
In the next few lessons, we will be playing various note and rest durations with two notes only: C and D.
A Quarter (1/4) note or Crotchet lasts for 1 beat.
An Eighth (1/8) note or Quaver lasts for half a beat.
Two Eighth notes together; they last for 1 beat. Their flags are
merged and the horizontal line that connects them is called a
‘beam’.
